What is AfterPill®

AfterPill® is after-sex birth control.

When used quickly, it reduces the chance of becoming pregnant after unprotected sex or regular birth control failure.

It contains 1.5mg of levonorgestrel, the best-selling and #1 doctor-recommended medicine for emergency contraception.  It is the same medicine that  has been used safely and effectively in  regular birth control pills for over 30 years.

AfterPill® Emergency Contraceptive can be used effectively for up to 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex or birth control failure.  It is more effective the sooner you use it, and it has been shown to be  most effective when used within 12 hours following unprotected sex.

If you are already pregnant, AfterPill® will not work. It will not terminate or harm an existing pregnancy. According to the World Health Organization, levonorgestrel works similarly to regular birth control pills by preventing ovulation or preventing fertilization.

Like all birth control pills, AfterPill® does not protect against HIV/AIDS  or other sexually transmitted diseases.

Is it safe?

The active ingredient in AfterPill®  has been safely used in many birth control pills for 35 years.  It is estrogen free and FDA approved. Plus, it’s the #1 doctor-recommended  medicine for emergency contraception.

While AfterPill® reduces the risk of pregnancy after unprotected sex or birth control failure, it will not impact your ability to become pregnant in the future.

The most common side effects associated with 1.5mg levonorgestrel include changes in one’s period, nausea, lower abdominal pain, fatigue, headache, dizziness, and breast tenderness.

Since its approval in 2006, over 20 million over-the-counter levonorgestrel emergency contraception products have been sold in the U.S. alone.

What AfterPill® is not.

AfterPill® is not RU-486, the abortion pill.  It will not work if you are already pregnant. It will not terminate an existing pregnancy. Multiple doses will also not work to terminate a pregnancy.

AfterPill® is not as effective as regular birth control in preventing pregnancies.  It is an after  unprotected sex, emergency birth control product that will reduce the risk of becoming pregnant if used within 72 hours (3 days).

It is not protection from HIV/AIDS or any other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

What you need to know about AfterPill®

When taken as directed, Afterpill® is safe and effective, and the side effects are generally mild. Some women may experience side effects similar to those of many birth control pills. These include: changes in your period; nausea; lower abdominal pain; fatigue; headache; dizziness; and breast tenderness.

If you should experience abdominal pain, you may have an ectopic pregnancy and should get immediate medical attention.

The only way of knowing whether AfterPill® has worked is when you get your next period, which should come at the expected time. If your period is more than seven days late, you may be pregnant.

Keep in mind, AfterPill® is less likely to work if:

  • You have unprotected sex or contraceptive failure again in the same menstrual cycle after taking AfterPill®.
  • You’ve already had unprotected sex or contraceptive failure earlier in your menstrual cycle.
  • You vomit within two hours of taking AfterPill® (talk to your healthcare professional if this happens).

If you are over 165 pounds, you should consider speaking with your healthcare professional regarding the most effective emergency contraception options for you.  Some research suggests levonorgestrel-based emergency contraceptive solutions may be less effective among women who are over 165 pounds.

Do not take AfterPill® if you’re allergic to levonorgestrel or any of the other ingredients in AfterPill®.
